Our Code of Conduct: Ensuring Safety, Privacy, and Integrity
What are the professional standards for UK mediators? At Mediation Today, our Code of
Conduct is our commitment to a safe, ethical, and effective resolution process. It governs
every action we take, ensuring your dispute is handled with the utmost integrity.
Core Ethical Commitments
• Absolute Confidentiality: All mediation proceedings are strictly private. Unlike
public court hearings, there are no public records or media coverage. What you say in
mediation stays in mediation, subject only to legal exceptions.
• Guaranteed Impartiality and Neutrality: Our mediator, a former solicitor, is
entirely neutral. The focus is on facilitating a quick and fair resolution, not on
generating billable hours. We do not take sides or impose decisions.
• Voluntary and Empowering Participation: The mediation process is entirely
voluntary. You are never trapped and can choose to withdraw if you feel the process
is not working for you. This ensures that the power to decide remains in your hands.
Professional Standards and Safeguarding
• Ethical Screening: Your safety is paramount. We conduct a careful ethical screening
for all cases and will not proceed with mediation if there are issues of domestic
violence, child protection concerns, or a lack of mental capacity from any party. This
ensures the process is appropriate and safe for all involved.
• An Honest Assessment: Our integrity begins with our first conversation. During your
free 30-minute “Reality Check,” we will provide an honest assessment of whether
mediation is the right fit for your dispute. If we believe it is not, we will tell you
upfront.
• Self-Determination: The goal of mediation is to empower you to find your own
solution. Our mediator facilitates the conversation, but the final agreement is created
and owned by the parties involved. This leads to more sustainable and respected
outcomes.
